New Governor Induction

Outline of event:

The role of the school governor is complex and challenging. It is essential that the governing board is well prepared and understands the scope of their role and the different requirements. This event is designed as an induction for new governors.

This course addresses the 'Knowledge' requirements as outlined in the Governor Competency Framework:
1A - Setting direction - Everyone on the board
* key features of effective governance
1B - Culture, values and ethos
* the code of conduct for the board and how this embodies the culture, values and ethos of the organisation
1D - Collaborative working with stakeholders and partners - Everyone on the board
* key stakeholders and their relationship with the organisation
2C - Financial frameworks and accountability - Everyone on the board
* the financial policies and procedures of the organisation, including its funding arrangements, funding streams and its mechanisms for ensuring financial accountability
2D - Financial management and monitoring - Everyone on the board
* the importance of setting and agreeing a viable financial strategy and plan which ensure sustainability and solvency
* how the organisation receives funding through the pupil premium and other grants e.g. primary sport funding, how these are spent and how spending has an impact on pupil outcomes
* the budget setting, audit requirements and timescales for the organisation and checks that they are followed
* the principles of budget management and how these are used in the organisation
4A - Roles and responsibilities - Everyone on the board
* the role, responsibilities and accountabilities of the board, and its three core functions
* the governance structure of the organisation and particularly how governance functions are organised and delegated, including where decisions are made
* how the board and any committees
5A - Statutory and contractual requirements
* the need to have regard to any statutory guidance and government advice including the Governance Handbook
* the Ofsted inspection/regulatory framework

This event will take place at County Hall, 6.00pm-9.00pm.

Learning and Teaching Outcomes:

At the end of this event participants will be able to:

* describe the three essential roles of governing boards
* explain the current Ofsted framework
* explain some key principles of financial management
* identify the main responsibilities of governing boards
* identify the support available for governing boards

We expect that all CPD will involve integral evaluation processes
