CLA Designated Teacher Training: Emotion Coaching
This training is for Designated Teachers for Children Looked After (CLA) and staff who work with CLA within their school.
Outline of event:
The aim of this full day training is to explore how Emotion Coaching can be used to promote the educational achievement and emotional wellbeing of CLA. Emotion Coaching is an evidence-based, universal approach for supporting sustainable emotional health and wellbeing. It is based on the principle that nurturing and emotionally supportive relationships promote positive outcomes and resilience. Through Emotion Coaching, children and young people are supported to self-regulate their emotions and behaviour, improving competencies to manage difficult feelings.
The training will explore how Emotion Coaching can be used to create an ethos of positive learning behaviour and aid staff confidence to de-escalate situations when behaviour is challenging. The relational approach will provide an alternative to classic behaviour management strategies and we will explore how moments of heightened emotion/behaviour can be used to guide and teach children about more effective responses. Emotion Coaching is based on the work of John Gottman (1996) and has links with the Attachment Aware School Programme (Bath Spa University).
The training will be delivered by the Educational Psychology Service.
This training is from 09:00 to 15:30.
Cost: FREE. Please note that non-attendance will result in a charge of £40.
Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Learning and Teaching Outcomes:
• To develop an understanding of the neuroscience and psychological theory underpinning the use of Emotion Coaching.
• To develop an understanding of the different emotional styles relevant to Emotion Coaching.
• To explore the four steps involved in Emotion Coaching.
• To explore and experience the techniques involved in Emotion Coaching.
• To reflect on practice with respect to Emotion Coaching and consider next steps to supporting CLA.
We expect that all CPD will involve integral evaluation processes
